Remembrance Day Parade
The Group joined Golcar British Legion for it’s annual remembrance day parade in the village. A brief service was held at the war memorial in Jubilee Square and then we paraded down to the British Legion on Scar Lane.

The scout section had made a wreath display with poppies labelled with the names of all those from the parish of Golcar that have died in war. The memorial was on display in the entrance to the British Legion. Many thanks to the members of our adult support team for marshalling the route and to all our members who turned out on a cold November morning to take part.

It’s not the most exciting event on the calendar but scouts and explorer scouts spent a couple of hours each bag packing at Morrisons in Meltham on 3 March. We raised over £800 on the day and one parents company has subsequently match funded this for a further £500 – making this a really successful fundraising event.

The weather was dreadful but we still held our annual group environment event on Sunday 29 April. Activities included: litter picking around the village, making raised beds for our allotment plot on the community garden, designing the layout of our allotment and planting some tubs with flowers for Golcar Lily Day. We would like to thank local company Shaw Timber for donating two tables and some wood to make the raised beds for the allotment.

Last year, whilst in Kandersteg, the Scout and Explorers met a Ugandan Scout Leader called Gidd’s. Since then we have been in regular contact with him. With this being the case, we decided this year that we should look at Uganda as part of our International Night. In the weeks leading up to the international party, each section looked at different aspects of Uganda.

All Sections have participated in the Faith Partnership Award. This Award involves learning about a different religion and comparing it to a Christian faith. This year we chose to learn about Sikhism and we compared it to the Methodist religion. In February we visited the Providence Methodist Church in Golcar. Reverend Pam Ward told us all about how the Methodist religion was started by a man called John Wesley.

On Saturday 13 March 2010 members of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts – plus a good number of parents – took part in the Eiger North Face Challenge. This was a sponsored event with the Scout and Explorer Scout Section money going towards their Kandersteg fund.Of course we didn’t go to the real Eiger – we walked from Newsome Scout HQ, to the summit of Castle Hill – 18 times!

We decided to give it one more go – this year’s event had no specific theme and we did get more entries than last year – over 20 in total. The standard of entries was very high – there were some excellent scarecrows on the trail. 42 families took part in the trail, which started at Golcar Scout and Community Centre. The scout group had made a parade of scarecrows – with beavers, cubs, scouts, explorers, leaders..

Our first group event of 2014 was our environment event, which was held in Golcar on Sunday 13 April. Activities included litter picking around the village, clearing the ginnels, weeding on the allotment, planting seeds and planting the new flower beds around the Centre. Members of all sections turned up to help – along with parents and grandparents too.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up so far, we look forward to working with you at our future events. "Scouting provides me with loads of great opportunities and without the support from parents, we can't take part in as many adventurous activities because our leaders are too busy fundraising, maintaining the building or watering the allotment." - said Isobel, 14, Explorer Scout.
